Michigan Needs a Raise!

ICPJ along with a number of community organizations, labor unions, and student groups feel that we've lived long enough here in Michigan with our current minimum wage, and we have begun gathering signatures in order to place an initiative on the November 2006 ballot.  According to the National Council of Churches, at $5.15 per hour, full time workers fall far below the poverty line.

Encouraged by successful 'raise the wage' campaigns in Florida and New York, among others, we believe that if we can gather enough signatures (about 350,000), the people of Michigan will stand with us.

How can I help?

• Sign up to collect signatures. ICPJ is looking for volunteers to collect signatures in their congregation, neighborhood, business, or other organization. Contact johanna@icpj.net for more info.
• Attend the next planning meeting! The next meeting will be Monday, February 13, at 7:00 pm at Memorial Christian Church. Contact johanna@icpj.net for details.
• Sign the petition! We have six months to gather 350,000 signatures in Michigan, between January and July. Strategies for gathering signatures will be discussed at the planning meetings.
